Food Safety
If you want to start a food business you will need to register it first. You can register by completing a food registration form.
If you run or manage a food business you will probably need a written food safety management system. 'Safer food, better business' is a Food Standards Agency system specifically designed for either retailers or small caterers. Alternatively, if you purchase our Food Safety CD ROM you will find the forms and documentation you need to develop your own system.
If you manufacture certain foods and sell them through other outlets you may need approval. Types of foods that would require approval include:
- meat preparations and products, such as sausages, pies
- dairy products, including pasteurised milk, cream, cheese, yoghurt
- fishery products, including shellfish, smoked fish, pastes
- egg products, including pickled or pasteurised eggs
If you think your business may require approval, or if you want further advice, please contact the Regulation Adviser in the first instance.
